Null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) is commonplace in biological research. But it appears that we have been too lax about it. http://www.nature.com/news/psychology-journal-bans-p-values-1.17001 This certainly mirrors our experiences in biological data. But the reality of the problem is that samples are difficult to come by, experimental methodology have large variations and people need to publish. Not an easy issue to solve.
